How Do We Determine the Cause of Your Knee Pain?

Joint Regeneration Group of Virginia specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of joint pain. We ask a series of questions and give our patients a physical examination that includes:

  • Examine your knee, inspecting for swelling, tenderness, warmth, and any visible deformities like bowlegs or knock-knees.
  • We also assess your range of motion, checking how well you can bend and straighten your knee.
  • We can also conduct tests like the McMurray and Lachman tests to evaluate specific ligaments and structures within the knee.

The Main Cause of Knee Pain

The main cause of knee pain in older adults is normally osteoarthritis which is the wearing away or degeneration of the cartilage in your knee joint. According to the Arthritis Foundation, 1 out of 2 adults will develop knee osteoarthritis in their lifetime. While osteoarthritis damage to the knee joint cannot be cured, the symptoms of osteoarthritis can be managed with treatments we offer at the Joint Regeneration Group (JRG) of Virginia.

In addition to osteoarthritis, pain in your knee may be caused by:

  • injuries from sports
  • Injuries from accidents
  • Work-related injuries.
  • Heavy physical activity
  • Lack of use
  • Sprains or Strains from every day movement

Knee pain can even be caused by sitting in a constrained area or sitting on knees for a prolonged period. Being overweight puts you at greater risk for knee problems. Overusing your knee can trigger knee problems that cause pain

Athletes who run or play sports that involve jumping or quick pivoting are also more likely to experience knee pain and problems. Common knee problems include sprained or strained ligaments, cartilage tears, tendonitis and arthritis. But whether an individual’s knee pain is caused by aging or injury, it can be a nuisance and even debilitating in some circumstances.

If you have tried pain reduction injection elsewhere without success, we may still be able to assist you as your original knee injection may have never wound up in the right place.

I was using a cane because of the pain in my knee (really my leg hurt from thigh down to my ankle). They explained what they could do and I started treatment of 5 injection, over 5 weeks. By the second week I felt improvement in my knee. Now 6 weeks out still no pain. So glad I made the call.
